Tanzanian surgeons identified surgical skills capacity as a major problem when they attended the first ACC-ESS meeting as observers in 2000. At that time, CNIS was invited to come to Tanzania to implement our surgical courses.

Essential Surgical Skills (ESS) courses were introduced to Dar es Salaam in 2003, in Moshi in 2005 and in Mwanza in 2011.

The ESS courses in Dar es Salaam are held at Muhimbili Hospital Department of Surgery.

The Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College (KCMC), located in Moshi, acts as a center for many medical and paramedical training programs for Africa. The University of Ottawa supports the ESS program in Moshi, where courses are held up to three times a year. Drs. Paul Moroz, Robin Fairfull-Smith, Wylam Faught and Hassan Shenassa are the Canadian facilitators of ESS courses in Moshi.

The ESS courses in Mwanza are held at the Bugando Medical Centre.
