Mekele (or Mekelle) is the capital of the Tigray region of Northern Ethiopia and is also home to the Mekelle University, one of Ethiopia’s medical universities.

CNIS introduced the Essential Surgical Skills (ESS) course in Mekele during the Innovation Project. In 2005, CNIS launched a new 2-year project to establish surgical learning centers at six Universities in Ethiopia. The Universities in the project established learning centers dedicated to surgical and obstetrical care at the end of the project.

In 2006, the surgical department of Mekelle University was one of the six surgical libraries in the country to receive new surgical and medical books through a CNIS book shipment, donated by the Sabre Foundation. Mekele received 628 of the 4200 books, of a total donation worth $300,000.
