CNIS Celebrates 25 Years of Sharing Skill and Saving Lives

February 18, 2020

CNIS Staff
January 2020

Since our inception in 1995, CNIS has been dedicated to its mission.

It has been a 25-year rollercoaster ride. There have been high and low points but thanks to efforts by many Canadians and Africans, we have continued. During those 25 years when it seemed we would not be able to continue, unexpectedly, someone would step up and support the work. Even when that support came from an organization, it always involved the financial support of an individual. CNIS has expended an annual average of $500K. Thousands of hours have been contributed not only by health professionals but also by dedicated individuals with a myriad of skills.

Another important contribution has been from those who have advocated for the CNIS in health service and teaching institutions across Canada and Africa. Not to mention, the dozens who have made key interventions and the hundreds who have made contributions, which in aggerate, have been necessary.

We'd like to single out  Dr. Gwendolyn Hollaar, a long time CNIS supporter, former board member, board chair, and twice organizer of the CNIS Bethune Round Table in Calgary, who has been recognized in 2019 for the Royal College International Collaboration Award. Her leadership in the Laos project has advanced postgraduate medical education and residency training.

For the last 5 years, we at CNIS have been teaching skills, providing infrastructure, and digitizing our work. This work has been accomplished with a smaller budget than which was available before the closure of the Canadian International Development Agency. But, we are entering 2020 with a $250K grant to compare digital midwifery training to standard training. Having this larger grant will stabilize CNIS as we enter our 25th year of innovation. There will be more news about this project in the upcoming year. In the meantime, please read our news to see all of the amazing activities we conducted in 2019 — highlighting Canada, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, South Sudan, and Guyana.

As we celebrate our silver anniversary, we encourage everyone to celebrate these past 25 years by making a contribution to our work. How will your contribution make an impact? There are many critical dimensions of our work which most funders do not support.

A CNIS silver membership costs $1,000. We intend to subscribe 25 silver members by the end of 2020 and your support can help us reach our goal. Bronze members can contribute $500 — equivalent to $20 for each of the 25 years of CNIS or $10 per year with a $250 contribution.

With the support of many, CNIS has taught skill to 50,000+ Africans. We hope that with digitization and continued support of Canadians, that the teaching of skills will be multiplied, as the tasks are addressed by a new generation in the next 25 years.
