Dr. TAYLOR RECEIVES ORDER OF CANADA

January 7, 2011

Dr. Taylor teaching Essential Surgical Skills in Zambia

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, announced 54 appointments to the Order of Canada on December 30.

Dr. Robert Taylor, CNIS’s surgical associate, was one of the 13 BC residents to receive this rare honour. The appointment acknowledges Dr. Taylor’s contribution to improving medical services and surgical care in underserved populations of the world.

Dr. Taylor’s involvement with CNIS dates back to 1998, when he spearheaded the introduction of Essential Surgical Skills into Malawi. His role within CNIS has also involved teaching surgical skills courses in other countries, developing curriculum, and raising awareness within Canada of the global burden of surgical-care. Dr. Taylor is the Director of the Branch for International Surgery at the University of British Columbia, as well as the founding chairman of the International Surgery Committee of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons.

The Order of Canada is one of our country’s highest civilian honours and recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation. CNIS is very proud of Dr. Robert Taylor and congratulate him on his well-deserved appointment to the Order of Canada.
