A CNIS Headquarters Update

February 26, 2020

CNIS HQ Vancouver

We'd like to give a big kudos to our amazing team of volunteers!

In 2019, our head office activities included an open house in June, incredible teamwork of model making with our volunteer sewers, and a fundraising dinner and AGM in November.

Kudos to our superstar volunteers, Wanda and Janine, for their ongoing and unrelenting seamstress talents, and to Rajan Bola and Christine Li who continue to make time out of their busy full time student schedules to volunteer their passionate efforts to CNIS. Congratulations to Rajan who was awarded CNIS’ 2019 Volunteer of the Year and to Dr. Badria Mushi, CNIS’ 2019 African Partner of the Year.

In case you didn’t know, CNIS has become the national coordination office for the Bethune Round Table with the support of Canadian Association of Surgical Chairs (CASC). The $16,000 proposal was intensively prepared by our CEO, Office Manager, Accountant, and Director of Women’s Health. Fortunately, proposals to the Donner Canadian Foundation and the Fund for Innovation and Transformation were also successful, and we are awaiting responses from a few more.

Another product of office activity was a 3-year MOU with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

At UBC in March, at an annual event called The Great Hatch, a collaboration was developed with a team of UBC students to develop an app using near field communications (NFC) technology. The Community Maternal Danger Score Application (CMDS) app empowers pregnant African women to input their personal health information to improve their quality of care when interacting with their healthcare system. Post event, this team continued to work with CNIS in the development of the CMDS app prototype. The team received the Joule Healthcare Innovation Award for Biggest Potential Impact.
