The University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada’s Branch for International Surgery, is offering a groundbreaking accredited, graduate level online course—SURG 510-Surgical Care in International Health. This first-of-its-kind course is an essential foundation to understanding the global burden of unmet surgical need. Course instructors have a long association with UBC and the Branch for International Surgery and have been involved in surgical service, education and capacity building/releasing in low-resource settings of the globe. The next course is being offered in January 2010 and runs for 12 weeks. Whether you are contemplating working in the field of international surgery or incorporating international activity within your career this course will be beneficial. Safe Surgery Saves Lives Nursing Forum
October 29th, 2009
SSSL NURSE FORUM
On Saturday, December 5., CNIS held a nursing forum in Vancouver . Earlier this year, nursing workshops based on the Safe Surgery Saves Lives (SSSL) Checklist were held in Ethiopia. The intent of the workshops is to share the “pilot project” experience, and build upon it. An important and strategic component in the building process is learning from the experiences of those already involved in international work, so that human resources (i.e. nurses) can be mobilized appropriately, an effective outcome achieved and patient care in these under-developed areas significantly improved. Forum participants were introduced to the perioperative workshop’s content and process. Thank you to all who participated.
University of Ottawa adapted CNIS Structured Operative Obstetrics Course for Residents
September 9th, 2009[lang_en]On September 9th, 2009, first year residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ottawa participated in the first CNIS Structured Operative Obstetrics Course adapted for Canadian trainees. Residents reviewed surgical principles and anatomy, and each performed their first simulated cesarean section simulation from skin to skin. The feedback from our residents was overwhelmingly positive. One of our residents even went on to confidently perform her first cesarean section shortly after the course.
All of the residents agreed that the course represented their first and only formal teaching they had received on cesarean sections during their training to date.
The participants were also introduced to the CNIS and were enthusiastic about participating in its activities.
Course instructors Dr. Hassan Shenassa, Dr. Dante Pascali, Dr. Andy Narine and Dr. Hisham Khalil also enjoyed the opportunity to deliver the course, hoping to eventually travel to Tanzania to offer the program in the New Year.
