On May 9 and 10, 2008, the Branch for International Surgery, together with the Canadian Network for International Surgery will host the 8th Annual Bethune Round Table conference in Vancouver. The week prior to this conference the CNIS will be conducting four instructors courses.
The CNIS conducts structured surgical training courses for learners in Africa. The objective of the Instructors Courses is to understand the content and to practice teaching the CNIS courses in order to be an accredited instructor.
The Branch for International Surgery is an initiative within the surgery-related departments of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of British Columbia.
Mission: a) To provide a forum for the interest and expertise within the surgery-related disciplines of the Faculty of Medicine, UBC, in achieving the Vision. b) To promote the establishment of "international Surgery" as a valid area of study and practice within a medical/surgical career.

The Canadian Network for International Surgery (CNIS) is a non-profit organization that promotes the delivery of essential surgical care to the underprivileged. Our vision is to empower low-income countries to create an environment where the risk of injuries is minimal and all people receive adequate surgical care.
Since 1995, the CNIS has worked towards improving surgical care in Africa, through four primary program areas: 1) Structured surgical training courses, 2) Injury prevention programs, 3) Information transfer strategies, 4) Public engagement in Canada.

The primary purpose of the ESS Instructors Course is to ensure that each specific university's department of surgery has a sufficient number of faculty members who are trained to conduct the ESS Instructors Course. The second purpose of the Instructors Course is to update previously qualified instructors on any new course developments.
Surgeons taking this course are then qualified to teach the courses in Third World countries.
Containing new material released by the CNIS in 2008 on Cesarean Section and Assisted Vaginal procedures: Indications, Surgical Principles and Techniques.
The purpose of the structured operative obstetrics course is to teach the students management, technical and surgical skills in a structured way that maximizes learning for the students. The learning for the students is student-centered, problem-based and clinically relevant.
Training from this course will help address the situation in third world countries whereby women cannot get the care that they need during labour and delivery. Lack of this care results in a high maternal mortality rate. The structured training of surgical skills will reinforce good surgical technique, and therefore help with significant health human resource challenges.
The objective of the Structured Hernia Repair course is to teach surgeons how to train general physicians in the diagnoses and the surgical management of inguinal hernias safely.
The Structured Hernia Repair Instructors Course presents the didactic material including lectures and interactive teaching sessions to surgeons who wish to become certified to teach this course. The participtants in the instructors course will learn how this structured course assures the learners of a consistent educational experience.
The learners course progresses from interactive lectures to surgical simulation, and then continues to clinical instruction with patients. The instructors course also allows the surgeon to learn and practice the lectures, exercises and hands on simulations that each learner will use when taking the course. At the end of the course, the surgeon will have learned the training skills required to instruct general physicians to successfully perform uncomplicated hernia repairs.
The principles of trauma management are universal irrespective of the source of destructive energy (whether it is a landmine or a motor vehicle) and irrespective of the caregiver's educational level. The Trauma Team Training course (TTT ™) is designed to help personnel apply these principles to all types of injury.
The purpose of this course is to train personnel at the technical level to apply the principles of trauma management at centers with limited resources. TTT is unique because the unit of instruction is not an individual but the team. The team is comprised of personnel who handle acute emergencies is most low-income country hospitals; often, this does not include doctors and, if it does, they are junior doctors.
The Trauma Team Training Course was developed and tested in several formats since June of 1998 under the auspices of the Injury Control Center-Uganda (ICC-U), with funding from the Canadian Network for International Surgery (CNIS), and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) partnership and multilateral branches.
