Canadian Partners

Through its public engagement activity and advocacy within Canada, CNIS has developed formal partnerships with highly respected organizations, hospitals, foundations and universities throughout the country. Our partners collaborate with us in the implementation of our courses and enhance CNIS’ capacity to deliver our programs.

University of Alberta
The University of Alberta has supported CNIS surgical teachings program. U of A Alumni Dr. Ronald Lett is the founder and international director of CNIS. Dr. Lett resides in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and oversees all CNIS activity in Africa. Dr. Stewart Hamilton from University of Alberta has taught a surgical course in Addis Ababa together with Dr. Lett.
UBC Branch for International Surgery
The Branch for International Surgery is a University of British Columbia initiative committed to contributing to the improvement of surgical care among low-income and disadvantaged populations of the world. The BIS is affiliated with CNIS through the Bethune Round Table, as well as through annual surgical residence travel stipends.
University of Calgary
The University of Calgary supports CNIS surgical courses in Hawassa, Ethiopia. Calgary surgeons Drs. Gwen Hollaar, Doug Johnson, Rob Malloy and Zoe Parr have taught Essential Surgical Skills (ESS) courses for CNIS in Hawassa. An ESS instructors course has been held at University of Calgary, facilitated by Dr. Gwen Hollaar, who is also a CNIS board member.
ENAHPA Canada
The Ethiopian North American Health Professionals Association assists in improving healthcare standards, quality, access and delivery to the citizens of Ethiopia.ENAHPA supports CNIS Safer Surgical and Obstetrics and our Safer African Community Programs in Ethiopia.
McMaster University
Dr. Brian Cameron from McMaster University has taught Trauma Team Training (TTT) for CNIS in Georgetown, Guyana through CAGS, who has worked in the area since 2006. Julie Pemberton from McMaster is presently working on an evaluation of the program. A Surviving and Succeeding in Surgery in Africa (SSS) course has been held at McMaster, facilitated by Dr. Brian Cameron.
Memorial University Newfoundland
Memorial University supports CNIS work in Mekele, Ethiopia, where Memorial surgeons, Drs. Al Felix and Bill Pollett have taught on several occasions.
Office Of International Surgery
The University of Toronto's Office of International Surgery supports CNIS African Information Program. Since 1996, Ethiopia has been part of the CNIS library project, an electronic linkage to the University of Toronto medical library. CNIS also collaborates with OIS on the Bethune Round Table.
Universite de Sherbrooke

Université de Sherbrooke supports CNIS safer surgery and obstetrics Program in Bamako, Mali in West Africa. Drs. François Couturier and Vincent Echavé have been instrumental in establishing this link with Francophone Africa and have taught ESS in French in Mali in 2006 and 2008.


L’université de Sherbrooke soutient le Programme pour la chirurgie et l’obstétrique sans risques de CNIS à Bamako, Mali dans l’Afrique de l’Ouest. Les Docteurs François Couturier et Vincent Echavé ont joué un rôle essentiel dans le projet d’établir ce lien avec l’Afrique francophone et ils ont enseigné le cours de CCE en français au Mali en 2006 et 2008.

BC Women's Hospital
The BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre supports CNIS obstetrics program in Kampala, Uganda, as well as in Kigali, Rwanda. Obstetricians Dr. Jan Christilaw and Dr. Ellen Giesbrecht from BC Women’s have taught the CNIS Structured Operative Obstetrics course in Kampala. Dr. Christilaw sits on the CNIS board.
UBC Okanagan
UBC Okanagan Branch staff surgeons Drs. Bill Nelems and Gary O’Connor created the Okanagan Zambia Health Initiative. They taught CNIS’ first ESS course together with UBC Vancouver faculty Dr. Robert Taylor and family practitioner Dr. Glynn Jones in Mongu, Zambia in 2009.
Canadian Association Of General Surgeons
The Canadian Association of General Surgeons (CAGS) is the only national organization representing the interests of General Surgeons in Canada. CAGS has been working in Guyana since 2006. McMaster surgeon Dr. Brian Cameron has taught Trauma Team Training (TTT) in Georgetown, Guyana in collaboration with CAGS and CNIS. CAGS has also supported CNIS Essential Surgical Skills (ESS) courses in Gulu, Uganda. Drs. Barbara Leblanc, Guelph, ON and Ghee Hwang from Vernon BC have both taught ESS in Gulu with the support of CAGS.
McGill University
McGill University supports CNIS Safer Communities in Africa Program in Dar es Salaam. Dr. Tarek Razek, Director of the Trauma Program at McGill University Health Centre and CNIS Board chair since 2008, has taught Trauma Team Training (TTT) in Dar on several occasions and assisted in the establishment of the Injury Control Centre –Tanzania. McGill surgeons also support CNIS work in Ethiopia; Retired McGill surgeon Dr. Peter McLean, taught Essential Surgical Skills (ESS) in Ethiopia and also assisted with CNIS first book shipment to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. McGill surgeon Dr. Antoine Loufti started a surgical program in Ethiopia as part of McGill Ethiopia Community Health Project. McGill alumni Drs. Ronald Lett and Robert Taylor both teach and work with CNIS. Both Structured Operative Obstetrics (SOO) and Structured Hernia Repair instructors courses have been held at McGill, facilitated by Dr. Tarek Razek.
University of Manitoba
The University of Manitoba supports CNIS Safer African Community Programs in Ethiopia. Dr. Sarvesh Logsetty has taught CNIS burn management course in Jimma, Ethiopia.
Universite de Montreal
The Université de Montreal (UdeM) is the largest university in Quebec with over 55,000 students from around the world and some 10,000 employees. UdeM is the only Quebec university that teaches the full range of disciplines in health sciences and houses one of Canada's largest faculty of arts and sciences. UdeM is one of Canada's major research centres.
University of Ottawa
The University of Ottawa supports CNIS safer surgical and Obstetrics program in Moshi, Tanzania. U of O surgeons Drs. Paul Moroz, Robin Fairfull-Smith and Wylam Faught have taught Essential Surgical Skills (ESS) courses in Moshi. Dr. Paul Moroz sits of the CNIS board and is head of the Public Engagement Committee. A Structured Operative Obstetrics (SOO) instructors course has been held at University of Ottawa.
Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada
Comprised of over 3,000 professional members, including gynaecologists, obstetricians, family physicians, nurses, midwives and allied health professionals, the Society of Obstetricans and Gynaecologists is a leading authority on reproductive health care. The SOGC produces national clinical guidelines for both public and medical education on important women's health issues.
